
Test of English as a Foreign Language
The Test of English as a Foreign Language (or TOEFL, pronounced “toe-full”) evaluates the ability of an individual to use and understand English in an academic setting.
TOEFL is an exam required by most Universities in US and Canada to prove proficiency in English Language, especially by international students coming from countries where English is not native language. It measures the ability of the student with regards to listening, reading, speaking and writing skills to perform academic tasks in English language. Many Universities in Europe and other countries also accept TOEFL (IELTS is mostly popular outside USA). Popularity of TOEFL is growing day by day and more and more aspirants are appearing for the same.
There are two formats for the TOEFL test. The format you take depends on the location of your examination centre. Most students appearing prefer to take the TOEFL IBT test due to availability of Internet, examination centers that do not have Internet access offer the Paper-based Test (PBT).
Each section of TOEFL has a maximum score limit of 30, total maximum score is 120. Most universities require scores ranging from 80-100. Scores are posted online within two weeks of the test date. You can view score online at ets.org by creating your user ID. On test day, you can select max four institutions to send your score for free. You can send your scores to as many institutions as you choose for a nominal fee of US $17 per report. Scores are mailed to your approximately four to seven days after receipt of your payment and request.
